Ebook About New York Times–bestselling author: “In the art of true-crime reportage, Jerry Bledsoe is the best in the country . . . Before He Wakes has the suspense of a novel” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). Barbara Stager was known as a devoted mother, loving wife, and dedicated church leader in her Durham, North Carolina, community. When she “accidentally” shot her husband, popular high school coach, Russ, the police were inclined to believe her—until they learned that ten years earlier, her first husband had died in a strangely similar way. Sgt. Rick Buchanan’s relentless investigation into Stager’s life revealed a stunning vortex of compulsive lying, obsessive spending, and sexual promiscuity. With every new discovery, more of Barbara’s impeccable image unraveled. But the greatest shock—a damning piece of evidence Russ Stager left behind—revealed the nightmare truth about Barbara. With “the fine-toothed-comb reporting of [an] ace crime journalist,” this book takes us deep into a spellbinding case of double life, lethal lust, and almost perfect murder (Kirkus Reviews). “A shocking and well-written portrait of a dangerous woman.” —The New York Times “Mesmerizing.” —Ann Rule, New York Times–bestselling author of The Stranger Beside Me “This account of manipulation, compulsive spending, lying, promiscuity, and murder is made even more chilling by the fact that appearances are often deceiving.” —Library Journal “A profile of evil . . . Fascinating.” —The Baltimore Sun “Jerry Bledsoe is the master of true crime, the conclusion to what Truman Capote began. . . . Another stunning success.” —Patricia Cornwell, New York Times–bestselling author of ChaosBook Before He Wakes: A True Story of Money, Marriage, Sex and Murder Review :
What a story. A very “devout” baptist woman with a pathological need for sex and shopping buries her family in debt taking out loans to pay other loans. She has caught herself in a web of deceit forging checks, embezzlement and fraud. She becomes so desperate there seems to be only one way out. She murders her husband and makes it look like an accident. Then she can buy her way out with the insurance payments. After all, it worked once before. The book follows the trail that the detective painstakingly traced step by step. It covers the trail and the similarities of her first murder that she was able to get away with. It was a very interesting psychological study of a woman who was very involved with her church who people described as a very giving and devout Christian. This is a woman who is very calculating and who believes her own lies so much so that in spite of all the evidence presented at the trial she was shocked when the verdict came back as guilty. She was given the death sentence but the sentence was overturned by appeal and was changed to life.Since then she has been up for parole three times but so far has been turned down. She has also been allowed to go on lunch outings with a sponsor. This is a dangerous woman. She believes in the facade she puts on for others but given the opportunity she would repeat her pattern again without remorse. This is a woman who should spend the rest of her life in prison. this wife was living two lives. to most people, she was a responsible and generous wife, mom, and church-goer. for 2 husbands, she was a cheating, spendthrift who racked up a lot of debt and did whatever it took to fix her money problems - like killing 2 husbands for insurance money.she was raised in a very conservative baptist family and community by an overly controlling and critical mother and seemed to be the perfect daughter. she certainly was a person who worked hard all of the time to be perfect per the standards of her family/ community. however, she had a high sex-drive and loved expensive things.i think that she believed that she was obligated to be married to have sex, even though she was unable to be faithful. she has a high sex drive and wasn't happy in one relationship. sex had nothing to do with the murders. i think that it adds to the interest in her crimes, and there is a different standard because she is a woman. however, most people would find her philandering to be immoral and surprising. she would have been much better off if she did not believe that she had to meet moral standards and expectations she was raised with, though i am not excusing her crimes, and i think she got too light of a sentence as far as being eligible for parole.she went to church routinely and got involved with a lot of church activities, especially during her second marriage. her second husband was also a spendthrift, although she was much worse, and she hid their financial situation from him repeatedly to keep spending. she bought expensive clothes, new cars, jewelry, vacations - she just loved to shop and loved the good life, and they never had more than a modest middle-class income, even with the social security payments for her 2 kids with her 1st husband.she went through the life insurance money from him real fast, but would have been fine if she had stopped over-spending.she also quit job after job over the years, never earning much, or pursuing a career to be able to earn more, and stole from a bank when she was a teller. she took out loans to consolidate her debts, then loans to pay of the first loan, then defaulted. her parents and in-laws helped her and her 2nd husband get their finances at as manageable level once, only to find out years later after the 2nd murder that they were out of control again.lots of people from her church refused to believe that she could be a murderer. she made friends easily in jail. none of them thought that she was dangerous. after conviction, she was very involved with education and activities in prison, seeming like a perfect inmate. even in prison, she had to be ms. perfect. i don't think that was solely due to the future possibility of parole. she had an internal need to be perfect.the jury could have given her the death penalty since it was a capital crime to kill someone for money. for some reason, the onlny other option was life with the possibility of parole one day. the judge instructed the jury not to consider the possibility of parole in their sentencing decision - either they thought she should get the death penalty for the murder of her 2nd husband or not (evidence of the 1st husband's murder was allowed as similar acts in trial). i don't think this was a death penalty case, but i do think that she would be dangerous is ever released.the writer is talented. he tells a good story that is hard to put down. the details of the murders and what led up top them are interesting and even shocking. it's hard to believe sometimes that a person could do all the things that she did.
